And the professor asks the auditorium filled with hundreds of eager business students „My dear young minds, future millionaires, billionairs and yes, when to think about it, most of you will definitely fail as well, what is the most important part of any business?”
And the fearful voices inside the crowd start to offer ideas, one more silent than the other. „I don’t hear you,” says the professor. „Great idea!” shouts a man with pink t-shirt from the last row. „That’s important too, but what makes the idea work?” the professor still wants to know.
After answers such as a great business plan, great team, great location, great ideas...and then lastly celebrity endorsements the professor smirks „almost, but not exactly. The most important is M-A-R-K-E-T-I-N-G, marketing!”
And the professor is right, he must have done some practical work before he started teaching as well as marketing really is the key to everything you do. You can have a great idea, a great team, great business plan, a great amount of money, but if your marketing sucks then even the most unique, the best idea ever might not make it in the real world.
The the title of this post, four-hour project? Directly this post doesn’t have a thing to do with a four-hour project, but the idea behind the title is simple – put a lot of effort into the idea and putting the business to work, but then put 10x more effort to marketing. And in case of a four-hour project the marketing should take at least 40 hours...or actually a lot more. And marketing should never end.
